Proximity and Perspective

Have you ever published something, only to pick up a typo after many copies have been printed? Ever noticed a scratch on your prized possession? Ever mispronounce or stumble over a word when giving a presentation, or talking to someone you admire?

The impact of these events in our minds often depends on the level of magnification we choose to apply.

If we look so closely that all we can see is the imperfection, it can’t help but hold a similar stature in our thoughts.

But if we zoom out, if we look at the situation from a higher level of abstraction, then it takes on a different meaning.

Despite the typo, was your book was still popular and critically acclaimed? Even with a scratch, does riding your bike still bring you joy? Are you still friends with that admirable person after fumbling a word?

It’s amazing what looking at a different level of magnification can do for our perspective.
