Understanding isn’t agreement

To deeply hear someone, to really try and appreciate their truth, from their perspective isn’t necessarily to agree with them. It’s can simply be to understand.

Articulating the strongest possible version of their position back to someone, steel-manning their point of view, lets them know that they have been heard, and heard well.

And this understanding creates a platform for discussion, not division.
